Not long ago I was reading some random articles and came across a very interesting one written about the existence of werewolves, vampires and ghosts.  It's open to speculation of course, but it makes sense to me.
The following is from the section about werewolves:

"Are werewolves real? Of course they are. Why else would there be so many historical accounts and legends about them? Are they real in a physical sense, the way your cell phone is real? No, of course not. If they were, we would see werewolf heads mounted in hunting lodges. Like the true vampire, the true werewolf is spiritual in nature.
Human beings have the ability to project awareness onto the astral plane. The astral plane is plastic rather than fixed. This means that it can change its appearance, its forms, its climate, and even the shapes of its inhabitants, very easily. Think of the astral plane as a kind of dream world, for that is what it is. Dreams are a type of astral travel. Projection of awareness into the astral world takes place either deliberately or unconsciously. Unconscious projection is much more common.
We all project ourselves onto the astral plane when we dream. Usually, we project ourselves as our common physical forms, but sometimes we project in the forms of animals, or in bestial forms that are half-animal and half-human. In this way, we may become were-beasts in our sleep. There is some anecdotal evidence that this happens more often to those of a very vicious, blood-thirsty temperament, who have trouble controlling their emotions and their actions.
Usually, those projecting in the astral can pass the astral shadows of other human beings without being observed – the waking humans seldom see an astral form that passes near them. On rare occasions, they do see the astral projection, and then they believe they have seen a ghost or a doppelganger, or that they have hallucinated. More commonly, they can feel the presence of a projected astral being as a coolness when they are touched. That is to say, if you project yourself onto the astral plane, and encounter the astral reflection of your cousin, that person may feel a coolness if you try to touch his body with your astral hand.
To the person projecting on the lowermost astral level, it appears that they move through the physical world. On the lower astral level, the physical world is visible and seems quite solid and real, except that the astral traveler can do miraculous things, such as walk through walls or fly through the air. Consider your dreams. While you are dreaming, you move through a world that seems to be the physical world, but sometimes your dream-form does curious things – levitating, for example. You do not actually move through the physical world when you dream; you move through an astral world that very closely resembles the physical world, and which may reflect parts of the physical world.
The consequence of all this is that a vicious, bloodthirsty man may, when he falls asleep, assume the shape of a wolf or a wolf-like being on the astral level. If he retains consciousness, he may seem to himself to move through the physical world. His projected form may be so substantial that it may even be visible to other human beings who are awake, when that astral shapeshifter crosses a part of the lower astral plane that is in close conjunction with a part of the physical plane. The astral and the physical at times overlap to waking consciousness, and astral forms may briefly be seen or felt as though they exist on the physical plane.
This is the myth of the werewolf. People do see astral projections of other human beings that have bestial or partially bestial forms. On rare occasions, they can feel the touch of these astral were-creatures just as clearly as if they possessed physical flesh.
Part of the myth of the werewolf is that the person who changes into a wolf does not remember what was done during the change. This is based on the difficulty most people have remembering their astral projections, and what events transpired while they were traveling across the astral plane.
There are a few magicians who are able to deliberately project themselves into the astral world, and retain their awareness. They can change their astral bodies into the forms of animals. Shamans did this in order to assume the power of their totemic beast, so that they could draw upon its power in the astral world. But most werewolves and other were-beasts are projected unconsciously, and those who transform into these creatures on the astral plane have no memory of what they did there."

I've also done a feature on an artist who paints very awesome werewolves :D
