The female obsession in art

Journal Entry: Fri May 8, 2009, 1:09 PM

It's a subject which has arisen before, hasn't it.  Still kinda irritates me too.

To start with, when people happen to remark on the huge amount of females in art compared to males, I notice that a lot of females blame "sexist" male artists who go for big boobs and butts.   Actually, from observation I've noted that most male artists have a tendency to go for landscapes, nature photography, and more technical type pictures.

Thus, this female obsession is not coming from them, but female artists themselves.  I use the word 'obsession' because, just as an example in the style of photo manipulation, it would seem placing a female in your art has almost become mandatory...?!   With such a massive output of such pictures, hasn't it become rather common and uninspiring?    It rarely varies either... have we not all seen the female in the flowing dress looking wistful or melancholy?

Ironic too, isn't it... if a male artist portrays a heap of semi erotic males in his gallery, he would probably be considered gay.  If a female artist portrays other women this way, this is not naturally assumed.

I adore the male form and appreciate his role in art.    I do not think there is anything special or better about the female form.  And I'm further perplexed on why males are often overlooked by female artists.

Lol, maybe you poked a touchy subject here. Males are afraid to tackle male form in their art because it would be perceived as gay, and women are not comfortable working with male models. xD
Seriously though, the lack of males in art is puzzling me too. Men can be handsome/beautiful too, and if an artist can make them portray an emotion, all the better.

Indeed :) It's a great shame really, as I imagine this would hinder creative expression for some male artists.
Now that is interesting what you say, that women are not comfortable working with male models. Why do you think that is? Cos i have no idea at all! I am very comfortable with the male form. Whilst i do mainly wolves/landscape here, my other account is purely for male beauty ^^

Uh, I may sound as if I come from third-world country (duh... XD), but sometimes I get an impression that females are uncomfortable drawing / painting males, especially nude, because it would mean that they are interested in men in sexual kind of way. While it is perfectly acceptable by wide public that a woman is a sexual object and loads of advertisements allude in often blunt (if not rude) way to this, it still seems that male sexuality is somewhat... more dignified? It's definitely not as widely seen as female sexuality. Oh, people joke all the time about sex, but they are jokes... lacking any kind of solid proof, such as paintings. Add to this the fact that many people don't distinguish between artistic nudes and porn, and we have a mental barrier.
Or rather: I know two girls who draw men, but they are reluctant to show them to anyone outside close circle of friends. It's all about 'what people will think of me?' problem, which is still very much present in Poland. :P
This kind of counteracts with the increasing amount of chicks who carve number of their mating partners into their bed posts though.

Sorry if I blundered XD I'm a rather taboo-less person. Oops.

That was very enlightening! :) And i think it is very much the same for any country.
I like what you said about male sexuality being more dignified. Yes, i would definitely agree there! Female sexuality is totally exploited. Females complained for years that they were tired of being treated as sex objects, but it would seem they didn't mind, so long as they themselves did the exploiting and not the men.

Being that I am much older than the average deviant, it may be that maturity brings more comfort with portraying male nudity, which isn't necessarily sexual. :) Plus i've always liked the idea of being male and i'm rather masculine in nature, so maybe that's a part of it.

Well, that must be it :) I was speaking of girls in my age group and below, that is, up to 21 years old. It's considered inappropriate to be shy or modest, but there are still problems with speaking of males and sexuality as things that can bring happiness and comfort not only in physical sense. How very mature. lol

A lot of emphasis these past years has gone on females and sexuality. I think they've kind of left the males behind and perhaps it is due in part that females don't really understand the male sex  Or aren't really that interested in it anyway!
I guess i've got experience on my side :D

I have seen many more photo manips with women in them as oppose to men. In all honesty I started drawing the male form long before the female form, and I have to admit that every time I pick up a pencil I prefer to draw the male figure or portrait.
