The female obsession in art

It's a subject which has arisen before, hasn't it.  Still kinda irritates me too.

To start with, when people happen to remark on the huge amount of females in art compared to males, I notice that a lot of females blame "sexist" male artists who go for big boobs and butts.   Actually, from observation I've noted that most male artists have a tendency to go for landscapes, nature photography, and more technical type pictures.

Thus, this female obsession is not coming from them, but female artists themselves.  I use the word 'obsession' because, just as an example in the style of photo manipulation, it would seem placing a female in your art has almost become mandatory...?!   With such a massive output of such pictures, hasn't it become rather common and uninspiring?    It rarely varies either... have we not all seen the female in the flowing dress looking wistful or melancholy?

Ironic too, isn't it... if a male artist portrays a heap of semi erotic males in his gallery, he would probably be considered gay.  If a female artist portrays other women this way, this is not naturally assumed.

I adore the male form and appreciate his role in art.    I do not think there is anything special or better about the female form.  And I'm further perplexed on why males are often overlooked by female artists.

I've always drawn the male figure :) Ever since i was young too.
It's a shame really that the male is so overlooked, particularly so in photo manips. There is good male stock out there too.

Maybe b/c most stock is females with flowing beautiful hair and dresses? LOL Althoug, I have to think that maybe it is the artist portraying their feelings?

Wistful, melancholy ... lost dreams ... self reflection and some artist do portray this beautifully. It's nice to pretend.

However, I must agree that I'm a big fan of the male form myself, but it is difficult to get males to pose. I have three of them myself and I have to beg and plead for them to sit still long enough for them be shot.

lol! yes, guys to seem to be rather camera shy :)
glad to hear that you are a fan of the male form too :aww:
The stock truly is abundant in especially that category! I think this kind of image has become so overused that more consideration should be given to originality.

There must be a lot of lost dreams out there then!

I think that is why movies like Twilight are such a big hit. Lonely, misunderstood, angst-ridden, moody, love-lorn ... yadda yadda ... insert your fave melancholy adverb. :D

hehe :D I actually don't know that movie!
It's probably a lot to do with the fact that females feel more comfortable expressing their emotions too. Males feel the same but they tend to keep their feelings below the surface a lot of the time.

nice pic... although it's kind of lacking cos the figure is totally hidden! It would be great to see some beautifully portrayed males, like the way they do females. :)

Well, I enjoy the human form in general, be it male or female, but you right, it seems mandatory to put a woman in your art these days regardless of genre.

I've mainly been drawinf women alot lately because I need to tweak my artsiness when it comes to female anatomy...that and I've been on a SailorMoon kick lately. =P

Your gallery has a nice mix :) And I can understand that any artist wishes to be skilled in drawing both the female and male form.
But I must admit that it puzzles me when i see these other galleries overflowing with images that really look all the same to me!
I really don't think that there are a many female artists who really understand that males can be beautiful too.

I'm sorry i'm so far behind with my devwatch at FairyLord too! I will try and catch up with you soon
